Personal Statement from Chris Dowley
For years, I did conventional financial planning and asset management in a fashion consistent with the traditional financial planning process. At times however, results with some clients were limited and there was something lacking in the discussion. Investment results, cash flow, insurance benefits and retirement projections are all necessary but can be cold, dehumanizing, and frankly, not a lot of fun. They don't provide the emotional fire that lights up life and makes a financial plan a compelling financial road map.
The reality is that while I have made many people wealthy, I have not made them happy and neither has the money.
Money, even lots of it, is not enough. One only need consult the average supermarket checkout counter and its collection of tabloid reports to see the residue of wealthy and famous people's lives to see the results of too much money and too little attention to what is important in life.
In the late nineties, I discovered the idea of integral finance and a holistic approach to financial planning. My discussions with clients turned to things like family and vacations and life projects. There seemed to be little time or inclination to discuss things so mundane as investment returns.
Then in 2005, a conference of like minded advisors in New Hampshire changed my life and put vocabulary and structure around all I had been feeling and sensing. I have been on a very satisfying journey since then culminating in the Kinder Institute Life Planning Training in 2008. Now there is huge sense of satisfaction that what I am working towards is each client’s sense of urgency: something that really lights the fire in them and gets them up each day with a sense of vigor and enthusiasm.
Our discussions now focus on what is really important to them. We still take care of the fundamentals of healthy cash flow and investment management. But we do it with a sense of purpose that delights and inspires! |
